University of Manchester

University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is a centre of excellence in data science. We have breadth and depth of expertise and a track record of working with others to deliver both academic and real-world impact. Our leading schools of computer science and mathematics – amongst the strongest in the UK - form the core of an engaged data science community of over 400 investigators, with methodologists embedded in schools across the University. This community is led by Professor Magnus Rattray and forms the basis of the University of Manchester's Data Science Institute. The Institute’s role is to:(1) Lead the University’s data science strategy(2) Support the data science community(3) Facilitate data science research activities to explore solutions to data analytics problems by bringing together researchers from many disciplines and problem holders. (4) Build capacity in data science through training future generations of data scientists

Data Science Expertise

Our expertise covers the complete data science life-cycle – from information management, through analytics, to practical applications. A key feature of our approach is very close coupling between methodologists and translational scientists, drawing on strength-in-depth in real-world applications of data science. Our schools of Mathematics and Computer Science carry out world-class research in computational statistics, machine learning, visual computing, advanced interfaces and information management. Another important area of data science research is around confidentiality and privacy, which are a particular areas of focus of the Cathie Marsh Institute for Social Research. Underpinning these developments is the requirement for powerful, scalable and reliable algorithms and architectures. Across the University we are also addressing data-driven research in Health & Biology, Social & Policy, Environment, Urban, Business & Management and the Physical Sciences.

Courses Offered

MSc Advanced Computer Science; MSc Health Data Science; ACS: Data and Knowledge Management; MSc Statistics

Additional Information

Particular areas of strength include: • Health Data Science - we are one of four MRC Centres constituting the UK’s Farr Institute for Health Informatics Research, where we lead nationally on health data science methodology and regionally for North England. We lead the UK Health Data Analytics Networ (UK-HDAN) which • Physical Science - we play major roles in astrophysics/astrostatistics (LSST, DES, LOFAR, SKA) and particle physics (eg LHC), developing and applying data analytics to accelerate science eg the discovery of five new pulsars in deep space. • Systems Biology we have used data-driven methods extensively to elucidate structure and function in complex systems, leading, for example, to a complete description of the human metabolic network. • Business and Finance we apply data-driven methods across a broad range of applications, working with companies including General Motors, Tesco and Unilever to understand trade-offs between product quality, resource consumption, and consumer satisfaction. We have also provided advice to HM Treasury on financial market stability, based on analysis of tick-by-tick data. • Confidentiality and privacy – we investigate the issues that arise from the collection, dissemination and analysis of data and the research has many facets, ranging from ethics to mathematics, from social to computer science. Our privacy protection methods are employed across the globe by national statistical and government agencies, who use our software or software developed by third parties using our algorithms.. We contribute to the UK Anonymisation Network (UKAN) and to the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods on official and administrative statistics.
